The charges for shikara ride at dal jheel are around 700-1000 INR and one should bargain because they try to charge as much as possible. Try to be a smart traveler and if you are in group requiring 3-4 houseboats the bargain margin is even more. But shikara ride is good experience compared to price and you will enjoy sight of floating market, floating post office, meena bazaar, kabotar khana and much more. There is also a small island on the lake with some chinar trees that your shikara rider will show you from far. If you want to visit there he will charge some money extra being it located quite away.

The best time to enjoy Shikara ride at dal jheel Srinagar is either early morning or in evening. In afternoon hours it is good but best enjoyed when the sun is down. As the temperature rises a bit in the afternoon hours and shikara ride is best enjoyed in the cool weather. We went for shikara ride early in the morning and saw villagers trading and selling their products. Also, crowd is less in the morning so you get good view and photography options. Pictures in kashmiri dress are best taken with dal lake in the background. You will get floating photo studios at dal jheel and you can get kashmiri dress within these studios only.

Visiting dal jheel srinagar, two things are worth experiencing. One is Shikara ride at dal jheel and another is staying at houseboat overnight. Staying at houseboat in dal jheel srinagar is altogether different experience and many houseboat offers dining outside with view of dal lake. Dining with dal lake view or enjoying evening snacks with the sight of dal jheel are pleasurable. When you stay at houseboat you get two shikara rides complimentary from the houseboat. One for jheel gate to houseboat and another while going back from houseboat to dal jheel gate. But going for complete shikara ride to see the floating markets and much more is something you should not miss.

For those who seek offbeat experiences, you can go for the vegetable market tour in Shikara in the morning. It's way too early though, around 5 A.M. However, do tie up well with the Shikara and take the mobile number of Boatman, a day before. As we told our houseboat owner to arrange a tour for us. Even we woke up, but no boat turned up to pick us. I still regret having missed the tour.

If you are planning to stay at the houseboat, you will be picked and dropped to the houseboat in Shikara. The pick and drop service by Shikara is complementary by some houseboat. Check your houseboat before paying the shikhara guy. You can enjoy the Dal lake fully on a good houseboat and even plan your meals in the open terrace of houseboats overlooking the lake. There is no need for a separate Shikhara ride for a photo-op if you are staying at the houseboat. Overall, Dal lake is something you can not miss on a Srinagar trip

It reminded me of Gondola experience in Venice, the only thing, it was quite cheaper and water was way cleaner at Dal lake. Our houseboat provided the complimentary 1-hour Shikhara ride in the evening. It was a lovely experience and quite peaceful. Few photographer boats came by and disturbed us 2-3 times in order to sell photo shoots in Kashmiri dresses, but our boatman told them to go away. Other than that, it's fun and a must-do at Dal Lake

I have had boat riding experience at many places in India including Mahabaleshwar and Chandigarh, but I must say that this experience is quite different and unique. Try and go for the boat ride around half an hour before sunset, so that you can take pictures of shikhara experience with the sunset in the background. Also, if you wish to go for the photoshoot in Kashmiri Dress, finish that in either first 15 minutes or the last. I had preferred the first 15 minutes so that these hawkers stop pestering upon us and allow a peaceful experience.

If you visit Srinagar and miss out on Shikara ride then believe me your trip counts to half only. Shikara boat ride of Dal Lake gave me such a good experience. They’ve built beautiful tapestry kind of things on boats that gives you a full round of Dal Lake. But one thing kept irritating, our Shikara-man was constantly trying to steer the boat towards the people selling things. I vehemently refused but he kept on doing that. People try to sell you saffron by putting cheesy arguments like purest saffron that one can find in India. They also show you photo frames of people in full Kashmiri attire, so that you also agree. But the thing is people go on Shikara to enjoy the Lake not to shop.
