Srinagar along with other popular cities of Kashmir is safe for tourists and one can enjoy the best summer holiday in Kashmir. This is what I can say from my recent visit to Kashmir. The news of terrorist activity keep coming up but that never disturbs the top tourist places. Incidents like strike and encounter occurs occasionally but tourists never feel unsafe as the local people are very friendly and tourism is very important for them. Kashmiri’s want the tourism to grow in state as tourism is major industry in Kashmir. Don’t worry about current situation in Kashmir and go for the best summer holiday in India.

Hello everyone, I went to Srinagar early this month and it is safe to go on. The worst thing that can happen is you may have to modify your itinerary due to stone pelting or strike or any other such incident. So it is best to book your trip with travel companies that keep the situation of Kashmir in mind and are happy to modify the itinerary as per the situation. We had to change our day trip to sonmarg because of some strike. But the tour company very comfortably changed our itinerary and took us for Srinagar day trip instead. Two days later we went to sonmarg day trip. We booked our trip with tripscam solutions and they made it a memorable holiday for us.

For Srinagar trip under current situation in Kashmir the most important thing is that your taxi driver and tour guide along with tour operator should be good. Mostly it is local kashmiri people that will show you around Kashmir and the news of incident reaches them. These guys know how to handle the situation and you can feel safe with them. However it is good to book your tour with travel companies that offer to refund your money in case such incidents rise in Kashmir just before your trip and situation is not comfortable. So, it is best to book safe Kashmir trip with refund and confirm about the situation just before your holiday.

Just make sure that there is no major strike or curfew like situation before your holiday. Other small things are not going to affect your holiday. The current situation is good enough and no signs of curfew. However you should cancel your trip if such situation arises just before your trip as the major tourist points may remain closed. But small incidents like stone pelting won’t affect the tourist spots like Srinagar, pahalgam, sonmarg and gulmarg. Kashmiris are friendly and won’t harm you. Tourism is important for kashmiris and they treat the tourists well. Doodhpatri and yousmarg are also worth visiting.

It’s kind of funny but it is a scam that is so common in Kashmir that people not even protest. Everything you buy there that is of daily use costs you extra the shopkeepers actually charges you extra on medicines, pads, cigarette, cold drinks, chocolates or even chewing gums! They do so in the pretext of transportation duties and tend to persuade you that as this company do not have distributors in Srinagar they have to bear the brunt of transportation. I’ve also noticed the tendency not to give change. You’ll be lucky if your shopping costs you in whole number because they don’t actually return. So it’s better to take these daily usage things from your home rather than paying extra money everywhere

Please be careful when you hire an Auto Rickshaw or Tuk Tuk in Kashmir, Ask very clearly how much he is going to charge you for your destination and for how many persons. You will be surprised, when they ask for Rs.100/- for a destination of one kilometer or less. You will be surrounded by locals who will support the auto rickshaw driver. Then he will say it was for one person not for the whole auto (It accommodates three in the back seat). Do find out the exact fare from a decent local, perhaps a shopkeeper or a gentleman then hire an auto. We experienced this twice, once while returning from Lal Chowk to Hotel Grand Mumtaz, we settled for Rs.50/- at destination he demanded it was per person. However, we were immediately helped by the hotel security, who settled it with the driver. We learnt the actual fare was Rs.30/- only as the destination was less than a kilometer!

My Srinagar trip was mesmerizing; it was the same that I imagined. The only inconvenience was at the airport. I took a lot of time to get clearance from the security there. So be prepared to have your baggage checked while departing from the Srinagar airport, at 3 places. The first check is at the gate of the airport where you will have to get your baggage screened by getting out of your vehicle and then after reaching the airport the baggage is screened 2 times and you are also frisked 2 times before you get on the plane. Be sure to identify your check in baggage, before you board the aircraft. So do reach the airport well in advance to avoid any last minute delays and traffic jams.

It’s not that you always get conned or you always stay aloof from scammers, once in a while they get you. My taxi driver told us about some underground wholesale market of Srinagar, initially I refused because it’s not even on Google when you type major attractions of Srinagar. Anyways he actually persuaded me and took me there which now I regret. It was shady unordered kind of a market and actually with nothing exciting to buy and if something you want comes up then the exorbitant prices would make you leave. Haggling was out of question they were rude enough to make you leave as you enter. My Driver was so persistent to take me there because of the commission system. They get commission for every tourist they bring. So guys it would be nice if you stick to your plan but exploring of this kind never hurts.
