Traditions and customs in Kuala Lumpur

1. Thaipusam at Batu Caves

Tamil devotees carry kavadi — frames anchored by skewers through the skin — up the steps in a mass act of penance.

• Best time: January or February, at the full moon of Thai
• Tip: Enormous crowds through the night. Go very early or expect hours of slow movement.

2. Open house at festivals

During Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Christmas, Malaysian households traditionally open their doors to visitors of all backgrounds.

3. Batik making

Wax-resist dyeing on cotton and silk, with workshops around the city that let you produce a piece in an afternoon.

4. Teh tarik pulling

Sweet milk tea aerated by being poured at length between two vessels — a bar skill performed at every mamak stall.

5. Wau kite flying

The large decorated moon kites of the east coast, a rural tradition displayed in KL at cultural centres and festivals.
