1. ADO buses

Comfortable intercity coaches to Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Mérida.

Cost: MXN 100–500

2. Uber and DiDi

Both operate, though there is friction with the taxi union in the hotel zone.

Watch outTaxis quoting in dollars at poor rates; agree the peso fare or use an app.

3. R1 and R2 local buses

Cheap buses along the hotel zone into the centre, running constantly.

Cost: MXN 12

4. Rented car

The way to see cenotes and the smaller ruins.

Watch outCompulsory insurance at rates far above the advertised price, and damage claimed at return.

5. Maya Train

A new rail line linking the peninsula's major sites.

Booking apps in Mexico

Agreeing the fare in an app before you travel removes the argument at the end of the journey, which is where most transport scams happen. Links go to each app's official page — lookalike apps are themselves a scam.

Uber

Widely used across Mexico, with fares agreed before pickup.

Coverage: Mexico City, Cancún, Guadalajara, Monterrey and most tourist cities.
Why it helps: Removes the dollar-quoted fares and airport transfer desks that end at a timeshare presentation.

DiDi

Very widely used in Mexico and frequently cheaper than Uber.

Coverage: Nationwide.
Why it helps: Fare is agreed in the app before the trip, and the route is recorded — which removes the refused meter, the tampered meter and the fixed 'foreigner price' in one move.
